We’re on a Highway to Hull!!

Alright, I admit it.  I liked this title and now I’ve got to write an entry about it.

Game three of Man United’s 2016-17 Premiership season will indeed be against Hull City at KC Stadium.

There’s a little narrative here, in the form of ex-United player and Sir Alex Ferguson’s final assistant, Mike Phelan.  Possibly his most memorable moment in the Assistant Manager’s role was donning the Shorts That Sank a Thousand Ships (pic by @BeardedGenius).

Phelan is the current caretaker manager, of a Hull City defying desparate circumstances.  Steve Bruce abruptly departed shortly before the season started and their opening-day squad consisted of just two substitutes.

Despite this, Hull come into this game a 100% record in all competitions (three games, one of which was against Exeter in the League Cup) including a shock victory against the shock EPL Champs, Leicester City on the opening day of the season.

Adama Diomande is the man of the hour, the Norwegian forward having three goals to his name so far.

In other Hull-related news, I suppose this is as good a time as any to share a bit of trivia.  Apparently, they have a very casual fan in the form of Stephen Malkmus of Pavement fame.  He claimed on “Men In Blazers” that the Jicks song, “Tigers” is about Hull.  So now you know.

Needless to say (And yet I will anyway), United will be looking to continue their solid start.  If they’re going to challenge this season, these are the types of games that test the resolve and discipline.  Hull away is no glamour tie and all too often, these are the types of games where complacency strikes.

Hopefully the squad is up to handling that.  The fresh new season will probably mitigate that potential anyway.

I won’t make a prediction because that’s frankly, an invitation to be jinxed.

I’ll be looking for more of the same from United attacking-wise as was shown against Southampton.  It’ll be another game under the belt for the new-look squad.  Hopefully that leads to increased cohesion in the back line.

As long as we get a scoreline that has us “Phelan Good”… I’ll just get my coat…
